Pronghorn Antelope

Pronghorn Antelope

(Antilocapra americana)

  • Size: 75-140lbs // 2.7-3.4' tall
  • Diet: Herbivores, grass, vegetation, cacti, forbs, shrubs, sagebrush and wildflowers
  • Seasonal Habits: Migrate between feeding grounds in the winter, give birth in May and June
  • Temperament: Males have breeding territories with a group of females that they defend against other males, skittish

Most easily recognized by their white fluffy behinds. They are not actually a specie of antelope, but are most closely related to giraffes and okapis. The pronghorn is the fastest land mammal in the Western Hemisphere, being built for maximum predator evasion through running. It can run up to 55 mph for 0.5 mi (88.5 km/h for 0.8 km). While it is often cited as the second-fastest land animal, second only to the African cheetah, it can sustain high speeds longer than cheetahs. They can often be found all over Silvies including on the golf courses and grazing in Camp Creek meadow near the lodge and lakefront cabins
