Painted Turtle
(Chrysemys picta)
- Size: 4-10 in long
- Diet: Omnivorous, fish, worms, crickets and aquatic plants
- Seasonal Habits: Hibernate in the winter, sometimes all the way from Oct to March
- Temperament: Not overly aggressive, but can bite
They have a smooth dark shell. They live in slow moving fresh water with dense aquatic vegetation and a muddy bottom, such as our creeks and the Silvies river. Their skin is olive to black with yellow orange or red stripes. Fossils show they existed 15 million years ago.
