Mountain Bluebird

Mountain Bluebird

(Sialia currucoides)

  • Size: 6" long // 1 oz.
  • Diet: Omnivores, insects and berries
  • Seasonal Habits: Leave breeding grounds to winter in the southeastern U.S. or Mexico, short to medium distance migration
  • Temperament: Timid around humans, not aggressive

Light underbellies and black eyes. Adult males have thin bills and are bright turquoise-blue. Adult females have duller blue wings and tail, grey breast, grey crown, throat and back. In fresh fall plumage, the female's throat and breast are tinged with red-orange near the flank, contrasting with white tail underparts. Their call is a thin 'few'; while their song is warbled high 'chur chur'. They readily accept nest boxes and are the birds we are trying to encourage with the many bird houses you can see throughout Silvies. We encourage them so they can help with natural mosquito control as they can eat up to 2,000 insects a day.
