Belding's Ground Squirrel

(Citellus beldingi)

  • Size: 18-33 oz // 8.5" body & 2.5-inch tail
  • Diet: Grass or grass seeds
  • Seasonal Habits: They hibernate for nearly 7 months of the year, starting August. They emerge in late spring, and are eating machines
  • Temperament: They are initially hesitant around people but tend to live in and among human habitations

Oregon ground squirrels often sit up very straight and for this reason are also commonly called picket pins. They build large colonies of burrows and can cause extensive damage to grain fields and permanent pastures.
