Common Garter Snake

Common Garter Snake

(Thamnoplis sirtalis)

  • Size: 1 to 4 ft long
  • Diet: Carnivores, mostly fish, frogs, toads and insects
  • Seasonal Habits: Hibernate from Oct-Apr, but can be seen sunning themselves on mild winter days
  • Temperament: Non-venomous and not overly aggressive, but will sometimes bite

Also called garter snakes are black with yellow stripes running the length of their bodies and red spots. Unlike most snakes they do not lay eggs, but rather give birth to live young. They can often be found hiding in the sagebrush, swimming in the creeks and lakes, or sunning themselves on the roads throughout the retreat.
