Often heard before being seen due to its conspicuous harsh rattling call, both adults have blue-gray backs and breast bands, a ragged-looking blue crest and face, large head, white neck band and stout bill. Their bellies are white, but the female has a rusty-brown belly band in addition to her bluish neck band. Both adults also have a small white spot in front of their red-brown eyes.
