American Beaver

American Beaver

(Castor canadensis)

  • Size: 65 lbs // 4' long
  • Diet: Herbivores, aquatic plants and the soft inner bark of trees
  • Seasonal Habits: Beavers don't hibernate, but stay hidden, so it may seem like they are in hibernation
  • Temperament: May be extremely aggressive in defending territory against perceived encroachment; may be disoriented during the daytime and attack out of fear

In addition to being the largest North American rodent, the beaver is Oregon's state animal. While Oregon was being settled the fur trade was a staple to the economy, earning Oregon the nickname "the Beaver state." While beavers are no longer economically important, beavers create important habitats for fish and other wildlife.
